The work we do
E&B is a specialist rather than a general electrical contractor. Almost all of our work sits in mining and heavy industry, and most of it falls into three areas.
Underground mining electrical. Electrical maintenance, fault finding and repairs in operating underground mines — including the access, isolation and permit requirements that come with working underground.
Underground drill electrical. Maintenance and repair of the electrical systems on underground drill rigs — jumbos, production drills and cable bolters — covering control systems, looms, sensors and power circuits.
MCC and switchboard work. Building, refurbishing and modifying motor control centres and switchboards, plus testing and factory acceptance testing before equipment goes to site. This is workshop work as much as site work.
Alongside those, there is breakdown and field support, shutdown work, and electrical project work for mining and industrial clients. The mix means the work varies: some weeks are on the bench in Perth, others are out on site.
Qualified electricians with relevant experience
When E&B does hire, it is generally qualified electricians with a background in mining, underground, industrial, switchboard or heavy electrical work.
The single most useful skill in this line of work is practical fault finding — being able to work through a problem methodically on a machine that is down, under pressure, and get it right. Experience with underground equipment, motor control and switchboard work, or industrial plant maintenance all count for a lot.
Beyond the technical side, the things that matter are quality workmanship, a genuine approach to safety, and the ability to work effectively in mining and industrial environments — which means understanding site rules, isolation procedures and how to communicate with a maintenance crew.
An unrestricted WA electrical licence, a current driver's licence and the standard site tickets are the practical baseline for most work of this type.

Mining electrical work in Western Australia
For anyone considering this line of work, it is worth understanding what mining electrical work in WA actually involves day to day. It is a broad field, and the different areas of it ask for quite different things.
Underground electrical maintenance is its own discipline. Working underground brings ventilation, access, isolation and emergency procedures that surface work does not, and the electrical infrastructure — substations, reticulation, pumps, fans and lighting — has to keep running in wet, dusty and physically demanding conditions. Underground electricians who are comfortable working below ground are consistently sought after across WA operations.
Drill and mobile equipment maintenance covers the machines that do the development and production work. A modern jumbo or production drill carries a substantial electrical and control system, and faults can be anywhere from a damaged loom to a control or power supply issue. This work rewards people who are methodical, because the fastest fix is usually the one that is diagnosed properly rather than guessed at.
MCCs and switchboards sit behind almost every fixed plant installation. The work ranges from building and wiring new boards to drawing, through to refurbishing and modifying existing equipment, testing it and supporting factory acceptance testing before it is shipped to site. A lot of it happens in Perth workshops rather than on a mine site, and it overlaps closely with the work an industrial electrician does in processing and manufacturing plants.
Shutdowns are where a large amount of maintenance is compressed into a fixed window. Scope and timing are set in advance, the days are long, and the work needs to be finished properly within the window because the plant is coming back on regardless.
Breakdown and field support is the unplanned side of it. Equipment fails, production stops, and the job is to find the fault and get it running again safely.
Work across the sector is a mix of Perth-based roles, drive-in drive-out, and FIFO rosters to the Goldfields, Pilbara and other regions. The roster and location vary enormously depending on the operation and the type of work, which is worth weighing up alongside the technical side when considering a role.
